Hard floors are low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. The wrong cleaner or method can etch stone, strip sealer, or turn grout black within months. This guide covers the right routine for tile, grout and natural stone so your floors stay clean, bright and properly protected.
Daily & Weekly Routine
Sweep or dust mop daily
Dust and grit act like sandpaper underfoot. A daily sweep prevents micro-scratches on every hard floor type.
Mop with the right cleaner
Use a pH-neutral cleaner for tile and stone. Avoid vinegar, ammonia and citrus — they etch stone and grout.
Use minimal water
A damp mop, not a wet one. Excess water seeps into grout lines and unsealed stone, causing staining and mould.
Rinse, don't just mop
Dirty mop water left to dry leaves a haze. A quick rinse with clean water keeps floors bright.

Grout Care
Seal the grout
Unsealed grout is porous and absorbs soil until it turns black. Have grout sealed after every professional clean.
Avoid bleach
Bleach lightens grout temporarily but degrades it over time and discolours coloured grout.
Use a soft brush
For spot cleaning grout, use a nylon brush and a dedicated grout cleaner — never metal or wire brushes.
Re-seal annually
Even good sealers wear in traffic areas. Annual re-sealing keeps grout looking new.
Sealing & Restoration
Sealers fall into two types: penetrating (soaks in, invisible) and topical (sits on top, adds sheen). Penetrating sealers are best for natural stone and grout; they need re-application every 1–3 years. Heavily soiled or stained grout may need professional colour sealing or restoration rather than home cleaning.
